Hugo Mendez - Sofrito Tropical Disco

Hugo Mendez is one of the leading Tropical DJ’s in the UK and founder of the legendary Sofrito Tropical Warehouse Parties. Brought up on Latin music from an early age, Hugo regularly guests at clubs and festivals across the UK, Europe and Australia, spreading the Sofrito sound wherever he goes.

The Sofrito sound is a unique blend of African, Caribbean and Latin rhythms - a percussive explosion that includes heavy Afro grooves, old school mambo, Tropical Disco, bouncing samba, calypso funk and heavy Cumbia, bringing vintage styles up to date with exclusive dubplate edits and a contemporary club slant

Hugo has put together several albums for leading record labels, including the genre-defining Tumbélé! compilation for Soundway Records and the highly successful Tropical Funk Experience album for Nascente. The albums come from digging trips across the Caribbean – scouring dusty warehouses and shacks for forgotten vinyl treasures and painstakingly tracking down artists and producers from back in the day. Hugo also produces the cult Rhythmagic Orchestra project with Nostalgia 77, and runs the Sofrito Specials label.

Sofrito is an internationally renowned club and record label based in East London, run by Hugo Mendez and Frankie Francis. The ethos of the club and label come from the legendary Tropical Warehouse parties – the birthplace of the Sofrito sound – taking the best Tropical rhythms and giving them a contemporary twist through exclusive dubplate edits and a dancefloor attitude

As well as various Warehouse spaces in London and numerous guest spots around the globe, Sofrito events take place at the Jazz Café and Cargo in London.
Sofrito is not about so-called ‘world’ music – it’s about playing some of the best dance music ever made!

The Sofrito Specials label releases heavy club-friendly Tropical music, and has received strong support from DJ’s like Gilles Peterson, Quantic and Mr Scruff.
